WELCOME TO ANNA JÓNSDÓTTIR

Anna in a Nutshell

Welcome to my introduction.

I am an Icelandic classical trained opera singer, with interests in various type of music. I premiere new music, improvise, opera, lieder and ancient music as well as popular songs.

Folk music is one of my favorites, as can be seen from my various project. Projects like: CD with Icelandic folk songs sung a cappella, two concerts tours around Iceland in a special and  remote places and the last project, a 30-minute-long film from the concert tour 2019. The film is an artistic-, cultural- documentary where nature, music, song, culture, and stories are combined.

I am always looking for the next opportunity to translate life experiences into art.

In my leisure time  likes to take photographs, read poetry, ride a bike and be out in nature.

UP AND DOWN AND INBETWEEN

A little about my work with Icelandic folk songs

As a part of my creative carrier, including various project and music from ancient music to contemporary premiere, I have worked passionate the last decade with the Icelandic music heritage, the folk songs.

Using this unique ancient music with its dark, middle age texture, as a bridge for communication and time travelling. I have tried to bring it to the people, singing it a cappella, in often natural venues as, caves, light houses, crater, out in the nature, where the stories happen.

I have released CD with Icelandic folk songs, recorded in a Herring tank and a light house, traveled around Iceland in two concerts tours, 2015 and 2019 giving 22 performances. In addition to the latter concert tour, a documentary film was made with interaction of singing, folk songs, nature, and environment.

Finally, I am a member of the creative ensemble; Trio Máninn Líður, with Ursel Schlicht, piano (Kassel) and Ute Völker, accordion (Wuppertal), making a personal interpretation of ancient Icelandic folk songs and of newer songs by Jon Leifs.

_____________

In her unique way she manages to transform the songs into living time machine, giving the audience opportunity to feel and get in touch with gone generations and old time. She tells stories connected to the songs and encourages the audience to participate in some of the songs. (Garðar Guðnason, August 2020)

Thank you so much for your concert, I understand and connect much more to Iceland and the people, after hearing the stories and the songs. It was so illuminating, and your singing so beautiful. (Foreign woman in Akranes light house July 12th, 2019)

Summer 2021

Over the past decade, I have worked passionately with Icelandic musical heritage, using ancient folk music, with its dark, middle age texture, as a bridge for communication through space and time.  I seek to bring the music to the people, singing it a cappella in special places, connected to the old times. I  tell stories of the songs background. I make an effort to  transform the songs into a living time machine, aiming to create the opportunity of touching on gone generations

I have released CD with Icelandic folk songs, recorded in a Herring tank and a light house.  Subsequently, I have traveled around Iceland in 2015 and 2019, giving 22 performances, also making a documentary film, portraying the interaction folk songs, environment and nature.

EXPOSURE OF A SOLO VOICE

2021

Exposure of a solo voice is a one woman singing project  in collaboration with visual artist Sandra Berg Mozard. Songs for a solo voice, in environment inspired of songs and poems by Sandra. New criteria in singing. I have been singing folk songs a cappella the last decade, so this project is a natural continuation of that work.  Making the concert.  Interwine the music with visual art, giving it a deeper value and more tangible approach, connecting the artist, music, poem, environment and audience with strong bond.

"Anna Jónsdóttir, trained in old and new music, folklore and classical, impressed as soprano with a strong presence and gorgeous intonation.
Each piece became vivid by her clear introductions to the attentively listening audience."
